Following successful onshore tooling trials in 2016, Utility ROV Services were contracted by Subsea 7 to conduct mattress recovery operations from a pipe bundle in Shell’s Gannet field at a depth of 95 metres.
The Mattress Recovery Tool (MRT) was used to recover the 10-year-old mattresses laid on the bundle in various configurations – longitudinal, transverse, overlapped and stacked. UTROV® operators orientated and positioned the MRT on the mattresses, communicating with dive control to grip and slide mattresses subsea. Individual MRT legs were operated as required, ensuring that mattresses were gripped without snagging debris.
Anticipated mattress recovery durations were comprehensively surmounted, with the expected cycle time being reduced by approximately 17%.
